Oracle shipped a dense run of OCI updates this quarter — from expanded flexible compute shapes to tighter native integration between OCI Data Safe and Autonomous Database. Here’s what actually matters if you’re running production workloads on OCI.
Compute and networking updates worth a second look
OCI’s E5 flexible compute shapes now support finer-grained OCPU/memory ratios, which matters most for memory-bound analytics workloads that previously had to over-provision cores just to get enough RAM.
Network Firewall now supports intra-VCN east-west inspection without an extra routing hop, simplifying microsegmentation designs that previously needed a hub-and-spoke detour through a security VCN.
Data and AI services
Autonomous Database’s built-in vector search moved from limited availability to general availability in most commercial regions, which changes the calculus for teams evaluating a dedicated vector database purely for RAG workloads.
OCI Data Safe added automated sensitive-data discovery for JSON columns, closing a gap that previously required custom scripts for semi-structured data classification.
What this means for your architecture
None of these updates require an immediate redesign, but the vector search GA is worth revisiting if you scoped a separate vector database into a GenAI architecture purely because Autonomous Database’s vector support was still in preview.
If you’re maintaining a hub-and-spoke VCN purely for east-west firewall inspection, the new intra-VCN inspection capability is worth a proof-of-concept before your next network redesign cycle.
